Friday

Sean has had the shop all to himself for most of the day. Juan and Jose are in the field working on a custom gate and fence combo. Sean has been playing his radio and grinding away at the mother of all residential handrails. The transitions have to be perfect before paint and he can testify to the fact that it takes just a little time and attention, another way to put it would be it that it is the most tedious thing to be doing in the shop. No worries though, Sean will power away till it is perfect. That's the way it is. When it is finally over the worth will be shown.

Working on the Website

Lately we have been powering away on the website, trying to get it live by the end of the month. This is the reason for our blog neglect. But not to worry. Morena Welding has been busy as usual and all the guys are back to work. Sean is back from his wedding/aftermoon, and Juan is back from Baja with a smile on his face as usual. He is the stainless steel master and is finishing up a heavy duty stainless steel gate while Sean and Jose are hard at work on a residential handrail. Handrails can be simple sometimes, meaning not this time. Under the main rail is a flat three inch wide by half inch thick piece of steel that is difficult to match to the curve of the retaining wall it wraps around. It is a sturdy handrail to be modest and the ironic part is that the aesthetic piece of steel is what makes it stronger. Also today, a client brought in a trailer that has stress cracks in the main frame connecting to the hitch, basically needs a new front end, along with a mini skid loader that needs some work as well. Never any down time around the shop and that is how we like it.

Details Details Details

Jose is all by himself still, working hard and fast. He has been meticulously cutting and welding a custom steel gate for hours on end. Every single piece of the gate is a different length by a fraction of an inch to give it the wave look. This is nice to look at but very difficult and tedious to create. He works like a champion though, keeping his head down and getting it done. I am sure he will feel good when it is all completed and installed.

Jose ala Carte

Yesterday was Sean's last day in the shop for a whole week. He will be in Vegas getting hitched. Rest in peace. Before he left he had some work to do on a security gate while Jose worked on a different gate repair across the shop. Today it is fairly quiet back there with only Jose working. But there is plenty of work that needs to get done and time isn't slowly down any. Sure as the Pope prays Monday will be back to business as usual.

More than Just Welding.

We all know that some people out there need extended driving lessons by all the signs and posts around town that are bent over and broken. So today Sean, Jose, and Emro went to a commercial property out in the North Park area to install a couple of concrete filled steel ballards to protect a standing keypad which provides entrance to the property. They had to move the keypad post and lay some concrete around the surrounding area so the ballards will properly protect it. Just goes to show that jobs are always more than just welding. You have to adapt to the needs of the customer and be proficient in all different kinds of trades. In the shop today Jose was also working on a steel gate that has some nice arrow tips on it. Counting down the days Sean.

Beginning of the Handrail

Today at Morena Welding Sean and Jose are working on finishing a residential handrail for a customer in La Mesa. The customer was a sculptural welder at one time and has a detailed idea of what the finished product should resemble. They are paying close attention to the details as always but this handrail has a particular bend around a retaining wall that is especially tricky. They pre-fabricated the rail on-site to make sure all the measurements couldn't lie when they got it into the shop. Today, Sean finished the loops on the ends where code makes the railing return for safety reasons. Now they are completing all of the welds and finishing the assembly in the shop. I have been taking a lot of pictures lately and I think it has got the boys a little on edge. I know that it is hard for me to work when someone is pointing a camera at me. Jose finally asked me today why I am taking so many pictures and I just tried to keep the situation light by saying it was to make him famous. Sean is already on edge before I got in his face this week with the camera. The poor guy is getting married in a week so needless to say he is probably thinking too much already. No offense to his bride to be, I am sure she is a great gal if she puts up with our Sean. Anyway, congratulations will soon be in order.

Steel Parking Garage Gate Vs. Car

Friday was a good day for Morena Welding. Sean and Jose, with some help from Emro, installed a huge replacement underground parking garage gate. The original one we had made was bent by a smart guy trying to beat the door opener and, well, he didn't. He must have hit it with some momentum because the three inch square steel frame was bent at least a couple of degrees. So, this time we made a thicker gate just in case another person is in a hurry and decides to attack it with their automobile. It took four strappingly strong men to lift the gate into place, and two cubicle dwelling sales people to help balance it while in motion. This residential complex has given us a couple service jobs after installations. It seems they have residents that like to try and beat garage door openers, they must be busy people. While we were installing that gate on one side of the complex there was another gate on the other side that was also hit by a resident. This time the collision ripped the spring right off its steel bracket. Again, must have been a heavy hitter. It is ironic that by trying to beat these gates, because of being in a hurry, some of the residents break them and cause the entrance, exit to be closed, which makes them use another side that takes them longer to get to. More work for us though. We also did many of their pool entry gates at the complex. Just another day working with Morena Welding.
